    Recombinant Hemagglutinin-esterase (HE) is a full-length of mature protein derived from the yeast cells. The expression region of this protein is the 19-424aa of Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) HE protein. It carries an N-terminal 6xHis-tag and has a calculated molecular weight of 47.7kDa. Its purity is greater than 90% as determined by SDS-PAGE analysis. In-stock HE proteins are available now. This recombinant HE protein may be used to produce specific antibodies or in the studies of BCoV infection.

    The HE protein is one of five major structural proteins of BCoV. It contains two important functional domains: the lectin domain that recognizes sugar receptors in the cell and the esterase domain that bears a receptor‐destroying enzyme activity capable of removing cellular receptors from the surfaces of the targeted cells. Both of these two domains may be critical for virus entry. Therefore, apart from the S protein, the HE protein acts as a second viral attachment protein for infection initiation.

Mediates de-O-acetylation of N-acetyl-4-O-acetylneuraminic acid, which is probably the receptor determinant recognized by the virus on the surface of erythrocytes and susceptible cells. This receptor-destroying activity is important for virus release as it probably helps preventing self-aggregation and ensures the efficient spread of the progeny virus from cell to cell. May serve as a secondary viral attachment protein for initiating infection, the spike protein being the major one. May become a target for both the humoral and the cellular branches of the immune system.
